How to Store Fondant: Keep Your Sweet Creations Fresh!

fondant

Every pastry enthusiast tries to understand the ingredients they use so they can handle them safely. One of the most widely used ingredients is fondant. This magical sugar dough can be shaped into anything our imagination brings to life, from realistic flowers to figures. Its flexibility and ability to take on any color and shape make it a popular choice among cake designers. Kids love it too! However, once you've created your figure, the question arises: how do we properly store the remaining fondant?

In this article, I will cover everything you need to know about storing fondant so your sweet creations remain fresh and perfect.

Let’s get straight to the point!

What is Fondant?

To understand the specifics of storing it, we first need to know what it is. Fondant is essentially a "dough" made from sugar, water, and fructose syrup, with a texture similar to modeling clay. It is commonly used as a cake covering or for figures and flowers. It can be colored or used as is, as it comes in various colors. It is also very easy to shape into different forms, making it a popular choice among bakers.

Why is Proper Storage Important?

Fondant can sometimes be a bit tricky to store.
Improper storage can cause it to dry out, crack, or become too soft, which can make your figures bend or completely fall apart. Proper storage not only ensures that your fondant remains fresh and pliable, but it also helps maintain its color and shape.

How to Store It

Now that we know why proper storage is important, we can dive into the specifics of how to store fondant.

Unopened Fondant

If you have fondant that is still in its original sealed packaging, the good news is that it can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place.

Opened Fondant

If you have opened your fondant, proper storage is crucial. Here are the steps you should follow:

  • Wrap the fondant tightly in plastic wrap or seal it in an airtight container.
  • Place the wrapped fondant in a resealable plastic bag (I use ISTAD bags from IKEA).
  • Label the bag
